Notes: This show featured the Phish debut of Burn That Bridge. Ocelot, NICU and First Tube contained Auld Lang Syne teases. Beauty of My Dreams was played for the first time since July 22, 2003 (133 shows). Manteca was played for the first time since October 30, 1998 (301 shows) and the ensuing YEM vocal jam contained Manteca quotes. Before midnight, several groups of multiethnic dancers appeared on stage and sang the Meatstick lyrics in their respective languages. The band joined the dancers and then stealthily disappeared from the stage, only to reappear at the other side of the arena in the giant hotdog from past NYE shows (’94 and ’99). As a result, portions of the Meatstick were pre-recorded. Appropriately, the post-show music was Captain Beefheart’s Tropical Hot Dog Night.

This show was part of the “2010/2011 NYE Run.”

It’s one of those things. You can’t see them all, supposedly, so you have to pick and choose. Unfortunately, some of the ones you pick not to choose turn out to be scorchers. When I apply Phish logic to this one, it’s a no brainer. Everyone knows that SHOW NOT SOLD OUT + MIDWEEK + LESS DENSELY POPULATED AREA = SICK PHISH THROWDOWNFEST. Essentially I knew this was going to happen, I just didn’t know how painful it would be. My buddy said he would trade the past five shows to be at this one, but I’m not so sure. We must factor in all the adventures, reconnections, and interactions with friends and strangers. To me that’s priceless.

There were a ton of big moments, including “After Midnight” (which was only the second time it was played ever) and the tribute to the recently deceased reggae legend, Gregory Isaacs, covering the song “Night Nurse”. Something I really appreciate about Phish is their musical diversity. They expose us to so much great music that we might have never even knew existed. It’s like they open a door and leave it there to explore if we want to. Check out this interview with Isaacs HERE. Everyone I talked to was freaking on that scene. It was a reggae infused night for sure because they also played the Marley tune, “Mellow Mood”, and their original “Makisupa Policeman”. If you want to get a really insightful review of the show, I suggest Mr Miner’s Blog. I like the way he writes.

Before I go I would like to take a minute to thank all the streamers and dreamers out there. A special nod to zzzstream and alphapig last night for their efforts, as well as a major salute to taper420 who stood by his policy of not streaming shows that are not sold out. There was a lot of controversy surrounding this, as well as the password protecting of the stream, so I would just like to clear a few things up. First of all, the streams have always been about broadcastin’ to the masses and sharing the groove. That’s how this whole thing started. The reason for all the rules and secrecy is to keep the streams alive and be a part of the greater Phish experience, not some rebel splinter group. We would never want anything we do to have a diliterious effect on the scene. Aren’t we all in this together?

UPDATE: Spent post show last night with Joephus and taper420 and Nooch. A lot of discussions on the future of the streams, as well as integrating more programming about all the super cool stuff everyone in our community is doing. It is amazing all the creativity and expression that blossoms out of our collective phish experience, I am so inspired by the way everyone just keeps it real and comes together. I had a chance to chill with Isadora Bullock last night, she’s does really sick phish prints. The best part was I didn’t know it was her until after she left. Just super cool peeps. And for the really real, you gotta check this out! Taraleigh Weathers, a real life Phish reporter! My dream for phishtube has always been to file reports from the scene, telling people what’s up and showing them how we do, and Taraleigh is a shining example of what I think a Phish correspondent should be. I am proud to know she is a voice for our community. Stay tuned, because I have my people talking to her people, and there are murmurs of a possible collaboration with phishtube.
